The wind doesn't just blow, it is constantly changing. It changes in both strength and direction in ways that baffle people new to sailing and many who have been around boats for a while. Some skippers seem to have a sixth sense when it comes to knowing what the wind is doing.

There are a few techniques that can help you understand what the wind is doing on the course and how to take advantage of it. Like everything else here, it takes a bit of practice to do it well.
